Process & Practice for Stage and Screen

With Robin Lynn Smith & John Jacobsen

Freehold is proud to again offer its accalimed Film Directing Course, the most comprehensive course in the Northwest for aspiring film directors.  The newly revised content focuses on the role of the director in shaping the story from text analysis, to blocking and coaching actors, to delivering their own five minute thesis film.  Directors can bring in their own scripts or Freehold will work with them to find material from local writers.

DIRECTORS are taken through the fundamentals of directing from working with text, to rehearsing with actors, to planning the shoot, to shooting, and through editing.  With over 52 hours of class and sminar, Directors begin by analyzing text to identify events and visualize a story.  The directors then move into working with actors to identify and physicalize subtext, adding depth and impact to performances.  One of three unique aspects of this course is that the material is rehearsed, shot and edited as many as three times on our quest to learn and get the best five minute film we can.  A final public screening at a local theater gives everyone a chance to celebrate their work on the big screen.

ACTORS, this is an opportunity for you to participate in this directing workshop and hone your acting for the camera skills with two of the best acting coaches in the Northwest.  Places in the enrolled ensemble will be by audition.  In this collaborative process, you will work with directors in their scenes and five minute film, who may be bringing their material forward into festivals and other venues.  You will rehearse and shoot multiple projects including the five minute film and will receive constant feedback from Robin and John about your acting, and how to improve your performance on camera at every stage of the course.  There is a final screening open to the public to showcase your work.  You will receive a copy of the five minute film.
