"One can say a true artist is always ready to make any number of sacrifices in order to reach a moment of creativity. The mediocre artist prefers not to take any risks, which is why he is conventional. Everything that is conventional, everything that is mediocre is linked to that fear."

– Peter Brook

The Lab

The Lab is the research and development arm at Freehold, which provides a forum to investigate new performance material and to rediscover classics. The lab gives accomplished artists a chance to develop new ways of working and to deepen and enrich their own practices, with emphasis placed on taking risks. The Lab offers an opportunity to expand and awaken a theatre audience that is hungry for new work.

The Lab has supported the development of new works that have gone to major venues in Seattle, New York, Vancouver B.C., San Francisco, as well as independent and major motion pictures.

Master Training Workshops for Working Actors

Master Training Workshops, led by internationally renowned artists, offer advanced skills development opportunities. These workshops often feed Lab performance projects. Visiting master artists like Gennadi Bogdanov, founding director of the Moscow School of Theatrical Biomechanics; Catherine Fitzmaurice, Master Voice Teacher; Elizabeth Moulton, Shakespeare Master Teacher; Lee Eisler, Artistic Director of Jump Start Dance Theatre in Vancouver, B.C.; and Leonid Anisimov, honored artist of Russia, work in collaboration with actors, directors, instructors, and choreographers seeking to deepen their knowledge and experiment with new techniques.
