Freehold was created as a safe place to practice what is not safe. We ask our collaborators, students, board, audience, and extended community to practice risk in rehearsal and performance, in individual practice, and in collaboration. We ask that they risk taking this art form seriously and risk believing that the theatrical event can be of consequence.

Qualities and Skills of a Successful Candidate:

Freehold Theatre seeks an energetic, inspired leader to partner with Artistic Director Robin Lynn Smith as the organization’s executive team. The Managing Director leads all administrative activities of the organization. Demonstrated effective stewardship of resources and a strong connection with and advocacy for the mission and vision of Freehold are essential traits of a successful Managing Director.

The Managing Director position includes the following responsibilities. A successful candidate need not necessarily be experienced in all areas, but must be able to articulate an understanding of their importance in running a successful small non-profit arts organization.

Business Development. The Managing Director seeks opportunities for new or expanded earned income pathways for the organization. Having a creative and inquisitive ability to find unrecognized opportunities while appreciating organizational capacity would be highly valuable.

Fundraising. The Managing Director is skilled in cultivating and sustaining our donor base. Maintaining positive donor relationships, and finding untapped ways to reach new prospective donors to increase contributed income is a vital part of this position.

Marketing and Communications. The Managing Director is responsible for maintaining our brand image and to find new and effective ways to reach prospective students. The ability to forward Freehold’s brand recognition and to reach an expanded audience with an eye towards increasing Freehold’s identity on a national level would be highly valuable.

Facilities. The Managing Director will oversee operations and maintenance of the physical spaces where Freehold resides, including the offices and the studios.

Financial Oversight and Administrative Management. The Managing Director works with the Artistic Director and Board Leadership to craft and approve an annual budget. They will hire and supervise a staff of three and provide oversight of payroll, AP/AR and have a reporting knowledge of the organization’s accrual accounting method and provide monthly financial statements to the board including cash flow projections and balance sheets.

Freehold’s Managing Director is a salaried position with full-benefits. Compensation will be competitive for an organization of similar size and scope. Freehold is an equal opportunity employer.
