New Home

What are we asking you to help us do and what will we gain?

To create a long-term, secure home in a thriving, diverse neighborhood excited to welcome what an organization like Freehold offers.

“The International District needs new uses that can bring in people who are inclined to patronize our existing business and appreciate the cultural richness the ID has to offer. Freehold is exactly the kind of new community member that Chinatown/ID is hoping to attract.”

Jamie Lee, Seattle Chinatown/International District Preservation and Development Authority

Working with the owner of the Freedman Building on Maynard Avenue South, we have signed a ten-year below market rate lease (with a five-year option to extend) to transform a 7000 square foot basement space in a mixed-use residential building into a Black Box Theater, two Studios, offices, and a library. With the capital investment of our supporters, we will gain stability and opportunity. With affordable art space increasingly scarce, this investment will provide:

  • Nearly double our current studio space, allowing us to increase our class offerings, provide a permanent space for Engaged Theatre project development, residencies, and workshops with partners like Path with Art, and provide greater availability of rehearsal and performance space for other smaller arts organizations like Satori Group, 14/48 Projects, Annex, Parley, and Sandbox Artists Collective.
  • Increased access: Just blocks from over 70 bus lines, the light rail, Sounder, street car, ferries, I-5 and I-90 off ramps and more than 3000 parking spaces. ADA access will also remove all physical barriers to participation in studio classes.
  • The security to put more energy into our programming of both the Studio and Lab without worrying about spiking overhead costs and building sales.
